Rotarians offer support for Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital

Lahore (NVS 30 Nov 2008) Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison invited Rotarians from Lahore to visit Shaukat Khanum Cancer hospital. The visit started with a guided tour by Naila Khan, Manager Marketing. She informed Rotarians about background history of the hospital and how the dream of a free cancer hospital for the poor patients became a reality with active support from all over the country especially by the students. Rotary members were happy to see the state of the art facilities at the hospital. They were also informed that once a patient enters the hospital system, no one knows whether the patient is paying own expenses or someone else has sponsored the treatment expenses. Later, a seminar was held in which District Governor Nominee Shehzad Ahmed informed the participants about different funding opportunities available through The Rotary Foundation for humanitarian projects. He made an announcement that he would formally promote the hospital during his tenure in 2010-11 and invited Rotarians to carry out service projects in the hospital. He thanked the hospital management for arranging the visit and the seminar. Dr. Faisal Sultan, Chief Executive Officer of Shaukat Khanum Hospital, presented an overview of the hospital and informed that treatment of about 70% patients is fully or partially sponsored by donations. He appreciated efforts of Rotary members and offered his full support for carrying out joint humanitarian projects in the hospital. The seminar ended with a question and answer session, where the participants showed their keen interest by asking pertinent questions. Rotarians expressed their desire to work together with the hospital management for carrying out service projects in the hospital. President Aslam Chaudhry, Raheela Malik, Dr. Rizwan Vohra, SEI Parvez and other notable Rotarians participated in the visit and seminar.

Rotary service projects

Rotarians Peter Orpen and Bashir Ahmed of Rotary Club of Brighton & Hove Soiree, UK spent a busy day in Lahore visiting various Rotary projects. In the morning, they went to Government Primary School Lucklines to see the development work done by Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison, which provided furniture, toilet facilities, playground equipment to the school and clothing, sweaters and shoes to the students. Later they visited LRBT Hospital which provides free eye treatment to everyone who goes there for treatment. Dr. Aqil Qazi and Dr. Khurram Mirza briefed them about the facilities of the hospital. Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison has provided funds for the IOL surgeries for the poor patients. Rotary Club will also provide an ophthalmic operating microscope worth four million rupees. In the afternoon, the visiting Rotarians went to Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital where Naila Khan, Manager Marketing & Fundraising, informed them about the history of the hospital and its working. More than 70% of the cancer patients are provided free or subsidized treatment. District Governor Nominee Shehzad Ahmed informed that Rotary Clubs would be invited to plan and carry out Matching Grants to provide medical equipment to the hospital. Rotarian Masrur Lodhi also accompanied the visiting Rotarians in the Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital.
