Rotary Membership Seminar held

Polio eradication is the flagship project of Rotary International for which the government of Pakistan, UNICEF and WHO are currently working together with Rotary International to make Pakistan a Polio-free country. Rotary members worldwide pool their resources to help the underprivileged in their local as well as international communities. This was stated by Past District Governor Dr. R.T. Arasu, who had come especially from Malaysia to speak at Rotary Membership Development Seminar held in Lahore the other day. District Governor Usman Masud highlighted the importance of membership development and retention as an important tool in the growth of an organization. District Governor Elect Shehzad Ahmed shared his vision for the new District 3272 which will take place in July next year. He stressed that there is so much need of community service in the country for which more Rotary Clubs should be formed in cities where Rotary is currently not available. Other eminent speakers included Past District Governor Suhail Ahmad, Past District Rauf Rohaila and Deputy Governor Satwat Butt. The seminar was organized by Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison and was sponsored bt Coca Cola. It was attended by Rotary members from Lahore as well as from other cities including Karachi, Peshawar, Rahimyar Khan, Multan, Sahiwal, Sheikhupura and Rawalpindi/Islamabad.

US Rotarians visit Institutes for special children

Rotarians Lon and Helen Penna from Rotary Club of Glenville, Rotary International District 7190, New York, USA) visited Al-Kharwarzi Institute for the Physically Handicapped Children where Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison has provided braces to its students through a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant. The US Rotarians showed special interest in the students suffering from Cerebral Palsy (C.P.). They visited them in their classes and interacted with them. They also visited the physiotherapy center and were impressed by the way everything was organized. Later, they later visited Shalimar Institute for the Hearing Impaired Children. They visited the classes and played games with the children. They also saw their artwork and paintings which had won many prizes. They praised the children for their art work.

They also visited the LRBT Hospital where Rotary has donated an Ophthalmic Operating Microscope worth US$ 60,000 through a Matching Grant. The Hospital provides free eye care and surgeries to all its patients. Later, they visited Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital. They were pleasantly surprised to know that more than 70% of the patients are provided free cancer treatment. They also met with Dr. Faisal Sultan, chief executive officer of the Hospital. District Governor 2010-11 Shehzad Ahmed, President Aslam Chaudhry and Secretary Elect Raheela Malik of Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison were with them during the visits.

US Rotarians address Rotary meeting

Rotary Club of Lahore and Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison organized a joint meeting in the honour of Rotarians Lon and Helen Penna from Rotary Club of Glenville, Rotary International District 7190, New York, USA. The visiting Rotarians have been instrumental in initiating numerous community service projects through financial assistance from The Rotary Foundation. Lon and Helen informed how they got involved in Kujer village near Sheikhupura after the villagers gave them a Royal reception without knowing that they would do anything for their community. This gesture won their hearts and they vowed to carry out some projects for the village. With active assistance and contribution from Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison, they have been able to provide basic necessities to four government schools. In addition, they have provided an ambulance to Kujer village, and computer and vocational centers in more than ten villages and communities around Sheikhupura. They mentioned that they consider Pakistan as their second home and feel at ease while in Pakistan. They stressed on the need to project soft image of Pakistan outside the country and informed that they are already doing their part in this regard. After the meeting, they exchanged signed Sister Club Agreement between Rotary Clubs of Glenville, USA and Lahore Garrison, Pakistan. At the end District Governor 2010-11 Shehzad Ahmed presented Rotary Wall Clock as souvenir to the guests. During their current visit, they have donated laptops to two organizations and have shown keen interest in starting micro-credit projects in Pakistan.

Rotarians Lon and Helen Penna providing community service locally

Rotarians Lon and Helen Penna from Rotary Club of Glenville, Rotary International District 7190, New York, USA) spent a busy day in Lahore. They visited Government Lucklines Primary School and saw the vocational center where ten sewing machines were donated through one of The Rotary Foundation Matching Grants sponsored by Rotary Club of Glenville and Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison. They, along with District Governor 2010-11 Shehzad Ahmed, participated in the health and hygiene awareness campaign by informing the students about the use of ORS, washing hands before eating, importance of vaccination and about spread of diseases by eating food available in unhygienic environment. They also distributed specially designed notebooks giving the same messages through sketches. Later, they visited Aabroo Education Welfare Organization school where Rotary has provided computers and books through Matching Grants. They distributed notebooks carrying health and hygiene messages among the students after interacting with them. The notebooks were provided through Matching Grant no. 51814.

Later, they visited Pakistan Society for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled (PSRD) where Rotary has provided funds for artificial limbs for the poor. Rotarians Iqbal Malik also accompanied them during their visits. Lon and Helen have been instrumental in initiating numerous community service projects in Pakistan. Lon is the Assistant Governor and Helen is the Assistant District Secretary of Rotary District 7190. Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison and Rotary Club of Glenville are sister clubs and have adopted Kujer and surrounding villages in Sheikhupura where Matching Grants have been provided for basic necessities to the government elementary schools, computer lab, community library, ambulance and sewing center for Kujer village in Sheikhupura. Computer centers and vocational centers have also been set up in more than ten villages and settlements through Rotary Community Corps set up in these areas.

Rotary Club donates artificial limbs to needy persons

Members of Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison visited Pakistan Society for Rehabilitation of the Disabled (PSRD) to get an update about the progress of provision of artificial limbs to the deserving persons through The Rotary Foundation Matching Grant no. 58347. Executive Committee members of PSRD informed that artificial limbs have been provided to nineteen persons at an approximate cost of Rs. 200,000. Rotarians presented donation of Rs. 100,000 to cover cost of limbs provided so far. They also pledged to provide another donation of Rs. 100,000 to provide artificial limbs to more needy persons. Rotary International District Governor 2010-11 Shehzad Ahmed, club president Aslam Chaudhry and Raheela Malik visited PSRD to present the donation. Mrs Parveen Umar, Brig Qayum Sher, Rehana Baray and Parvez Masud represented Executive Committee of PSRD. Rotary Clubs of Chicago Far North, Evanston Lighthouse and some other clubs from Chicago area are the international partners in this Matching Grant.

Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison arranges seminar on literacy

Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison organized a seminar on literacy on Friday December 18, 2008 at the Rotary Medical and Community Center. Aslam Kamboh, Project Director, Directorate of Staff Development was the guest speaker. His presentation explained the state of affairs of government and private schools by showing snapshots of enrolment in the public and private educational sector, their passing percentages, and the comparison of quality and quantity grades being achieved in both sectors. He informed that there is a dire need to improve the educational system to feed the increasing number of universities. He mentioned that there is no dearth of philanthropists in the country. All they want is a good cause which is being run in a professional and transparent manner. He explained how he started DPS schools in Okara and Deepalpur when he was the DCO there. Philanthropists actively participated in meeting the construction and other needs of the schools. Participants showed keen interest in the presentation and asked thought provoking questions. Rotarian Saeed Chaudhry offered vote of thanks and added that no doubt, there is a lot of room for improvement. He commented that with committed persons in public as well as private sector, inshallah, we would be able to make improvements in the system. The meeting was presided by President Aslam Chaudhry and was attended by Past District Governors A.Q. Alavi and Suhail Ahmed, District Governor Nominee Shehzad Ahmed, and presidents and members of various other Rotary Clubs. Rotaract Club and Innerwheel Club of Lahore Garrison also participated in the seminar. Rotarian Bashir Ahmed, President Rotary Club of Brighton & Hove Soiree, UK also attended the seminar. At the end, gifts were presented to the guest speaker Aslam Kamboh, Rtn. Bashir Ahmed and Bandukwala family.

He said that on providing the artificial limbs to 20 disabled persons Hope Society has spent Rs 5 lacs and this project would continue on permanent basis with the cooperation of philanthropists. Rotary Club district Governor Shehzad Ahmed announced Rs 250000 donation for the project. Justice (Retd) Amer Raza Khan and Khalid Ghurki appreciated the Hope Societys efforts for the rehabilitation of disabled.

Later the participants met with the recipients who had received limbs under this campaign. They were presented flower bouquets. Later Justice Amer Raza and Khalid Khurki addressed the recipients and encouraged them to actively participate in their daily routine. Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison sponsored artificial limbs for six persons.

According to a press statement Justice (R) Amer Raza Khan,Nazim Wagha Town Khalid Ghurki and Rotary Club’s District Governor North Shehzad Ahmed distributed the limbs.Hope Society President Dr Khalid Niazi during his address said ‘Limbs for All’ project was inaugurated in the holy month of Ramadan and some 50 amputees have been registered under this project. He said on providing the artificial limbs to 20 disabled persons Society has spent Rs 500,000 and this project would continue on permanent basis with the cooperation of philanthropists. Rotary Club announced Rs 2,50,000 donation for the project.

PARADISE organizes workshop on adolescence

PARADISE organized a workshop for the mothers and young girls regarding problems related to adolescence and puberty. A large number of ladies attended this session. This session was organized to create awareness among mothers and daughters about normal physiological changes which take place in girls at this age. In the lecture Dr. Maimoona Ali and Dr. Yasmin discussed with the audience about the problems faced by the girls at this age and their solutions. General hygiene and diet care during this period was also discussed. At the end, a question answer session was held in which all the participants participated enthusiastically. They appreciated contents of the workshop and informed that even in this modern age mothers still feel hesitant to discuss the changes at pubertal age with their daughters, as result the girls sometime have to face an embarrassed situation. The workshop was sponsored by The Rotary Foundation Matching Grant no. 51814. Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison is the local partner while Rotary Club of Gladbeck-Kirchhellen, Germany and Rotary Club of Espanola USA are the International Partners.

Rotarians visit SKMCH

Rotarians from Lahore visited Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital (SKMCH) on Wednesday.
According to a press release here on Wednesday, Naila Khan, Manager Marketing, conducted a tour of the hospital where she informed Rotary Club members about the history of the hospital and how the dream of a free cancer hospital for the poor patients became a reality. The Rotarians were happy to see the state of the art equipment at the hospital. They were glad to know that once a patient enters the hospital system, no one knows whether the patient is paying the expenses himself or someone else has sponsored his treatment expenses. The visit was followed by a seminar, where District Governor Nominee Shehzad Ahmed informed the audience about different funding opportunities available for humanitarian projects. He announced that he would formally adopt the hospital during his tenure and invited Rotarians to carry out service projects in the hospital. He also thanked the hospital management for arranging the visit and seminar.

He informed that 40 hospitals of this magnitude are required to treat all cancer patients in the country while there is only one complete Cancer Hospital (SKMCH&RC) is available here for them. He offered his full support to Rotarians for carrying out joint humanitarian projects in the hospital. The participants showed their keen interest by asking pertinent questions.

PARADISE organizes workshop for midwives

PARADISE and Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison arranged a training session for the midwives. Dr. Maimoona Ali delivered a lecture on safe delivery methods. The presentation covered the topics related to safe delivery methods at home, methods of preventing complications and infections during and after delivery. Importance of tetanus vaccination during pregnancy was emphasized to prevent the deadly condition both in newborns and mothers who are more prone to this infection after delivering the babies at home. Use of sterilized cord clamp was emphasized instead of using thread for tying the cord after delivery. It was also stressed upon the midwives to wash their hands thoroughly before handling the patient and the newborn. The use of clean sheet, towel and necessary equipment was also stressed. The participants showed keen interest in the presentation. A question answer session was held after the lecture in which queries of the participating midwives were solved. At the end, safe delivery kits were distributed among the participants. The kits included a clean sterilized mat, soap, a sterilized razor for cutting the cord and a sterilized cord clamp. The workshop was sponsored through The Rotary Foundation Matching Grant no. 51814. Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison is the local partner while Rotary Club of Gladbeck-Kirchhellen, Rotary International District 1870, is the International Partner. Some officials from health department also participated in this workshop.

Rotarians offer support for Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital

Lahore (NVS 30 Nov 2008) Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison invited Rotarians from Lahore to visit Shaukat Khanum Cancer hospital. The visit started with a guided tour by Naila Khan, Manager Marketing. She informed Rotarians about background history of the hospital and how the dream of a free cancer hospital for the poor patients became a reality with active support from all over the country especially by the students. Rotary service projects

Rotarians Peter Orpen and Bashir Ahmed of Rotary Club of Brighton & Hove Soiree, UK spent a busy day in Lahore visiting various Rotary projects. In the morning, they went to Government Primary School Lucklines to see the development work done by Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison, which provided furniture, toilet facilities, playground equipment to the school and clothing, sweaters and shoes to the students. Later they visited LRBT Hospital which provides free eye treatment to everyone who goes there for treatment. Dr. Aqil Qazi and Dr. Khurram Mirza briefed them about the facilities of the hospital. Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison has provided funds for the IOL surgeries for the poor patients. Rotary Club will also provide an ophthalmic operating microscope worth four million rupees. In the afternoon, the visiting Rotarians went to Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital where Naila Khan, Manager Marketing & Fundraising, informed them about the history of the hospital and its working. More than 70% of the cancer patients are provided free or subsidized treatment. District Governor Nominee Shehzad Ahmed informed that Rotary Clubs would be invited to plan and carry out Matching Grants to provide medical equipment to the hospital. Rotarian Masrur Lodhi also accompanied the visiting Rotarians in the Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital.

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre

Rotarians from several clubs of Lahore visited Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre. The visit was organised by DGN Shahzad Ahmed with the purpose of exploring ways that Rotary can help Shaukat Khanum Hospital. The visitors were accorded a warm welcome and a comprehensive tour of the hospital.

The tour was followed a presentation cum Q&A session by Dr. Faisal Sultan, CEO of the Shaukat Khanum. He also discussed some of the future plans and highlighted some projects where Rotarians can possibly help raise the funds.

Speaking at the occassion, DGN Shehzad Ahmad said that he hopes to present SKMCH&RC as the main focus and most important matching grant project when he becomes the District Governor in 2010- 2011. But he does not intend to hold this good work till then and therefore wants to initiate the work and efforts from now. Also, he wants to include other clubs of the district in these efforts who are often asking a common question: What project should we do?

Included in the visitors were many young people who keenly expressed their desire to volunteer as well as help the hospital with its fund raising.

Rotarians visit Kujer and surrounding villages to see service projects

Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison members visited Kujer and other adopted villages in Sheikhupura to see the progress of computer centers, vocational centers, community libraries and schools. The development work has been carried out with funding from The Rotary Foundation Matching Grants. Bashir Ahmed and Peter Orpen of Rotary Club of Brighton & Hove Soiree, UK accompanied Rotarians from Lahore led by District Governor Nominee Shehzad Ahmed and Club Secretary Shaheen Ahmad. The team attended meeting of Rotary Club of Sheikhupura Aarzoo where President Waseem Bari and Secretary Iqbal Malik welcomed the visiting Rotarians from UK. Afterwards, the team visited Kujer village to see the two government schools, computer center and the community library. The school children were briefed about the benefits of polio immunization and polio awareness stickers were distributed among them.

Visiting Rotarians were the most impressed by the buffalo bank project where buffalos have been distributed among deserving families who use milk for their own consumption as well as sell it for income generation. Proceeds from the sale of offsprings are shared equally by the keeper family and the community organization. Later the team visited school for the street children and the vocational center sponsored by Rotary Club of Sucha Souda. The team also visited a hospital sponsored by Rotary Club of Farooqabad where free treatment is provided to the deserving persons.

Pakistan Society for Rehabilitation of the Disabled (PSRD) Old Students Association organised an annual Eid gift function to present gifts to the children at PSRD School that primarily caters to the needs of disabled children and has more than 200 students.

Mr Sherazee graced the occasion as the chief guest while District Governor Nominee (DGN) Rotarian Shehzad Ahmed was invited as the guest of honour.

The ceremony started with the recitation of the Holy Quran after which one of the alumni presented the annual report of the Old Students Association.

It was informed that many old students from the school are performing responsibilities in their respective organisations with dedication and commitment.

Later, gifts were distributed among students of the school by DGN Shehzad Ahmed and members of the PSRD Executive Committee.

In his speech, DGN Shehzad appreciated the efforts of the Old Students Association and PSRD School management in organising such a wonderful function. He thanked the corporate organisations, such as Mobilink and Metro, for sponsoring wheelchairs and gifts for the students.

He also motivated the students to study diligently, so they could become productive members of society and be one of the donors for their school in future.

Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison also donated four wheelchairs to the deserving students of PSRD School.

After the function, Mrs Parveen Umer, General Secretary PSRD, informed that PSRD has started providing free artificial limbs to the poor through the Rotary Foundation Matching Grant and the progress report would be submitted on a regular basis.

He informed that mostly local organizations are providing conventional limbs which are cheaper but are not flexible, while HOPE is providing modular limbs which are slightly more expensive but are durable and long lasting. The modular limbs take less preparation and fitting time and thus more patients can be accommodated in less time. Past District Governors A.Q. Alavi and Suhail Ahmed, District Governor Nominee Shehzad Ahmed, Club President Aslam Chaudhry, Charter President G.R. Siddiqui, Syed Rashid Rizvi, Haroon Naimat, SEI Parvez, Rotaract President Amina Chughtai and Syed Hussnain Kazmi were present in the meeting besides other members. Rotarians appreciated role of HOPE and offered to carry out joint humanitarian projects for the rehabilitation of disabled. The meeting was arranged as a part of a Matching Grant for providing artificial limbs to the poor funded by The Rotary Foundation. Through other grants, Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison is providing sewing machines to set up vocational centers for teaching sewing skills to women and girls. The Club is also providing health awareness services in Lahore. The Club will assist in providing an Ophthalmic Operating Microscope worth US$ 60,000 to LRBT Hospital, Lahore. The Club will also distribute buffalos and goats among the deserving villagers in Sheikhupura and Faisalabad districts in Punjab, and Tharparkar district in Sindh.

The sewing machines have also been distributed among Rotary Clubs in Sindh so that they can also provide an essential skill to the women and girls to help them earn their livelihood. The members also visited community library in Kujer village. Innerwheel Club and Interact Club of Lahore Garrison members also actively participated in the Medical Camp. The Innerwheel members took responsibility of administering polio drops to children and provided polio vaccine to about 100 children.

The Interact club kept the village children busy by asking them general knowledge questions and presenting them with small gifts and candies. Seventy five saplings were also planted in the village as part of the ongoing tree plantation campaign.

Hope Rehabilitation Society distributes artificial limbs

Hope Rehabilitation Society has distributed artificial limbs among 20 needy
amputees under the Project Limbs for All here at Hope Rehabilitation Centre Johar
Town. Justice (Retd) Amer Raza Khan, Nazim Wagha Town Khalid Ghurki and Rotary
Clubs District Governor North Shehzad Ahmed distributed the limbs in a function.

Lahore Garrison Rotary Club president Aslam Chaudhry, executive members of Hope
Society Humayun Khan, SEI Pervez, Dr Sohail Khan, Engr Salim Rafi and other
guests were also present at the occasion. Hope Society president Dr Khalid Niazi
during his address said that Limbs for All project was inaugurated in the holy month
of Ramadan and some 50 amputees have been registered under this project.

He said that on providing the artificial limbs to 20 disabled persons Hope Society has
spent Rs 5 lacs and this project would continue on permanent basis with the
cooperation of philanthropists. Rotary Club district Governor Shehzad Ahmed
announced Rs 250000 donation for the project. Justice (Retd) Amer Raza Khan and
Khalid Ghurki appreciated the Hope Societys efforts for the rehabilitation of disabled.
